Maryland Life Insurance Laws Protecting Consumers (MD)
The state’s Official Insurance Code of Maryland is the regulating force behind the insurance industry in the state. For the consumer’s benefit, policy requirements and claims procedures are overseen by this code.
-
30-Day Grace Period: This gives policyholders thirty days after a premium due date to make a payment, making it illegal for the insurer to cancel the policy until after the one month period.
-
Life insurance companies are also required by law to settle claims in a prompt manner. Any settlement that takes longer than thirty days (after the proper documentation has been filed) for final payment, will begin to accrue interest. All interest must be paid at the final settlement.

Maryland Life Insurance Regulations Protecting Insurers (MD)
The Official Insurance Code of Maryland also provides protection to insurers. The following laws help provide financial coverage to insurer:
-
Any fraudulent or inaccurate statements found on a policy or an application for coverage within the first two years of the policy’s life is grounds for policy termination.
-
Any misstatements regarding age may be found by the insurer at any time. Most of the time, the result will be a simple recalculation of benefits relevant to the proper age.

If your life insurance company was to become insolvent in the future, your policy would be partly protected by the Maryland Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association. This fund is available to you as long as your insurer is licensed in the state of Maryland, and your policy premiums are current.
There are maximum compensation amounts with this benefit, and they are on a “per insured individual” basis. A lost death benefit will not exceed $300,000, no matter the number of policies the insured had.
